An upgrade on the Citation I and the founding member of the Citation CJ family, the CitationJet (Model 525)’s impressive jet speed and good field performance make it a versatile and reliable charter option for short-haul flights.

About this aircraft

  • The Cessna CitationJet (Model 525) was certified in 1992 and Cessna made its first delivery of the aircraft in 1993.
  • The CitationJet’s cabin is typically configured to seat five, with an extra seat in the lavatory if required. A further passenger can fly in the cockpit if the aircraft is owned, however this isn’t possible on a chartered flight.
  • The CitationJet can fly non-stop from London to Milan or New York to Miami.
  • Baggage can be stored in the nose and tail cone, with room for up to five soft suitcases.
  • Production of the CitationJet (Model 525) ceased in 1999 as attention turned to the upgraded Citation CJ1.

The Cessna CitationJet’s (Model 525) success in the market set the groundwork for future models including the CJ1, CJ1+, CJ2, CJ2+, CJ3, CJ3+ and CJ4.

Interior design

The CitationJet usually features four seats in a club arrangement with another seat facing the entrance. There are also fold-out tables, a small galley and a rear lavatory that can be separated from the main cabin with a privacy curtain.

Below is the standard configuration inside a CitationJet.

Interesting facts to learn before you fly

  • The CitationJet was specifically designed to operate on short runways, so it can access more hard-to-reach places.
  • It can be flown by only one pilot.
  • The upgraded CJ1 is more modern and has some interior improvements.

Technological features

The CitationJet is powered by two Williams FJ44-1A turbofans. Its Garmin G1000 avionics suite includes a 12-inch multi-function display, a Class B terrain awareness system, and dual integrated altitude and heading reference systems.

History

Developed as an improvement on the Citation I and II, the CitationJet (Model 525) completed its inaugural flight in 1991, followed by FAA certification in 1992 and the first delivery in 1993. Over 350 were built before production ended in 1999, as attention turned to the upgraded CJ1.

Manufacturer

Cessna was founded in 1927 by Clyde Cessna and Victor Roos. It was originally called the Cessna-Roos Aircraft Company, but Roos’ name was dropped after he resigned just one month into the partnership and sold back his interest to Cessna.

Headquartered in Wichita, Kansas, the company specialised in producing small piston-powered planes and business jets. After becoming one of the world’s biggest general aviation producers, it was bought by General Dynamics in 1985 and by Textron in 1992. In March 2014, Cessna stopped operating as a subsidiary company and joined Beechcraft and Hawker as one of the three distinct brands produced by Textron Aviation.

Cost

Prices for the CitationJet range from $1 million (USD) for a 1993 model to $1.4 million for a newer model.
