  •

The Gulfstream G450 is a long-range and modern twin-engine business jet that can accommodate up to 14 passengers in luxurious surroundings.

About this aircraft

  • The Gulfstream G450 received certification in 2004 and entered service in 2005.
  • Some high-density interiors can seat up to 16 passengers, however most are laid out for 14, with four on a large divan.
  • The aircraft can travel about 8,000 km and fly non-stop for over nine hours, completing transatlantic and coast-to-coast US flights.
  • Its baggage compartment can hold up to 12 suitcases.
  • Production of the G450 ceased in 2018

The Gulfstream G450 is a direct descendent of the GIV and upgraded G400. Featuring the G400’s airframe with the G550’s nose section grafted on, its fuselage is 12 inches longer than the original GIV with added modern touches and upgraded technology.

Interior design

The G450’s spacious cabin can be configured to seat up to 16 passengers or sleep 6, but typically carries 14 on a mix of single and double leather seats and a four-person divan.

There’s a large enclosed lavatory at the rear and a well-appointed galley at the front, plus 169 cubic feet of internal baggage space.

Some models are fitted with an ‘Elite Interior’, which allows passengers to adjust the lighting and temperature, view flight information and call the attendant to their specific seat.

Below is a standard configuration found on a Gulfstream G450.

Interesting facts to know before you fly

  • Gulfstream’s large, oval signature windows flood the cabin with natural light and are positioned so you can see the world below from the comfort of your seat.
  • The G350 is a shorter-range version of the G450 that received certification in 2004.
  • The G450 demonstrated its speed in 2005, setting a city-pair record by flying from Washington DC to Luton, England, in six hours and 12 minutes at an average speed of Mach 0.85.

Technological features

The Gulfstream G450 is powered by two Rolls-Royce Tay 611-8C engines, each of which delivers 13,850 lbs of thrust.

In the cockpit, the aircraft controls are completely fly-by-wire, with no mechanical link between the pilot and flight surfaces. The Honeywell Primus Epic Gulfstream PlaneView system is one of the most advanced flight decks in business aviation, presenting critical flight status information on 14-inch LCD screens arranged in a landscape format.

Fitted as standard, Gulfstream's Enhanced Vision System enhances situational awareness at night or in adverse weather conditions by giving pilots a clear picture of runway markings, taxiways and the local landscape. Gulfstream also offers Synthetic Vision Primary Flight Display as an option to increase the level of safety.

History

In March 1983, Gulfstream started developing the G450’s predecessor, the GIV, as a re-engined, stretched-fuselage derivative of the Gulfstream III. A wing redesign lowered cruise drag and added fuel-carrying capacity, increasing the aircraft’s range by over 555 km.

The first GIV made its maiden flight in September 1985 and received FAA type certification in April 1987, before entering commercial service later that year. The model was upgraded to the special-purpose GIV-SP version in 1993 and later redesignated as the G400.

Work began on the G450 in 2001. The improved aircraft was slightly longer than the G400, with the G550’s forward fuselage and larger cockpit. The G450 received FAA certification in August 2004. Production began later that year and ended in 2018.

Manufacturer

Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation is an American aircraft company based in Savannah, Georgia and a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Dynamics. The company that evolved into Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. started in the late 1950s when Grumman Aircraft Engineering Co., known for military aircraft production, developed a twin-turboprop business aircraft at its facilities in Bethpage, New York, called the Grumman Gulfstream I (G-I).

Now, Gulfstream designs, develops, manufactures, markets and services the latest business jet aircraft and has produced more than 2,000 since 1958.

Cost

A Gulfstream G450 cost around $39 million (USD) when it was first released. Nowadays, prices range from $9 million for a 2005 model and $21.5 million for a 2017 model, according to Aircraft Bluebook's summer 2022 data.
